Zoe Daniel is a respected journalist, author, strategic consultant, and former independent Member of Parliament who has spent nearly three decades on the frontlines of global news and current affairs. Known for her integrity, analytical rigour, and people-first approach, she remains a passionate advocate for robust democracy, gender equality, climate action, and good governance.

FOREIGN CORRESPONDENT & JOURNALISM CAREER (1993-2020)

Before entering Parliament, Zoe spent nearly three decades as one of Australia's most accomplished and respected foreign correspondents, bringing clarity and insight to some of the world's most complex and challenging stories.

ABC Washington Bureau Chief (2015-2019)

As the ABC's United States Bureau Chief during one of the most tumultuous periods in American political history, Zoe led a team of more than ten media professionals covering the 2016 presidential election and the first term of the Trump administration. Unlike many observers, she was one of the few journalists who anticipated Trump's rise, having travelled to 44 states and territories—from Alaska to Puerto Rico—to understand the deep currents reshaping American politics and society.

During this posting, Zoe reported on multiple climate-related disasters, mass shootings, and other critical events, maintaining professionalism, empathy, and clear, comprehensive analysis in high-risk, emotionally charged situations. She became a trusted voice for Australian audiences seeking to understand the seismic shifts occurring in American democracy, policy, and international relations.

ABC Southeast Asia Correspondent (2009-2013)

From her base in Bangkok, Zoe provided on-the-ground coverage of stories ranging from major political upheavals to devastating natural disasters. Her reporting included:

  • The Bangkok protests and political instability in Thailand

  • The historic reform process in Myanmar, including exclusive interviews with Aung San Suu Kyi

  • The catastrophic devastation caused by Typhoon Haiyan in the Philippines

  • Coverage of the Khmer Rouge tribunal in Phnom Penh

At the time, Zoe's posting as a mother of young children was unprecedented for ABC correspondents, breaking new ground for women in foreign correspondence and demonstrating that parenthood and frontline journalism need not be mutually exclusive.

ABC Africa Correspondent (2005-2007)

Based in Africa during a period of significant conflict and humanitarian crises, Zoe reported from some of the world's most challenging environments. Her coverage spanned:

  • The regime of Robert Mugabe in Zimbabwe

  • The Sierra Leone civil war and its aftermath

  • The Darfur genocide

  • Conflict and humanitarian crises in South Sudan and across the region

Additional Experience

Throughout her career with the ABC, Zoe also served as:

  • National Business Reporter, working across flagship ABC programs

  • Reporter and producer for programs including 7.30 and Lateline

  • Coverage of the 2004 Olympic Games in Athens

  • Rural and regional reporter across South Australia, New South Wales, Tasmania, and Victoria

  • Presenter of various programs, including ABC News, 774 ABC Melbourne Mornings, National Rural News, and The World

Zoe began her journalism career as a radio producer in South Australia in 1993, demonstrating a commitment to storytelling and truth-telling that has defined her entire professional life.

EDUCATION AND  EARLY LIFE

Zoe holds a Bachelor of Journalism from the University of South Australia and completed her Higher School Certificate at Rosny College in Tasmania. Born in Melbourne (Moonee Ponds) on 28 November 1972, she moved to Launceston, Tasmania, at age two when her father, former Essendon footballer Peter Daniel, took up a coaching position there. Growing up in Tasmania shaped Zoe's connection to rural and regional Australia, an understanding she brought to her journalism and parliamentary work.

Zoe describes herself as a "social progressive, economic conservative" and a swinging voter, reflecting her commitment to evaluating issues on their merits rather than through rigid ideological frameworks. This independence, combined with her extensive international experience and deep understanding of policy processes, makes her a uniquely valuable strategic advisor, speaker, and consultant.

LOOKING FORWARD

Following her parliamentary service, Zoe continues to advocate for the issues that matter most: robust democratic institutions, meaningful climate action, gender equality and women's safety, economic opportunity for younger generations, and corporate and government integrity. She remains committed to bringing clarity to complex issues, facilitating constructive dialogue, and empowering individuals and organisations to create positive change.

Whether through strategic consulting, executive coaching, public speaking, board service, or writing, Zoe brings the same rigour, authenticity, and commitment to impact that have defined her career across journalism, politics, and public advocacy.
